What is the Difference between the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer?

Now Available at East Hills CJDR!

In 1962, Jeep released the Wagoneer, which led the charge into the future. The Wagoneer marked a lot of firsts within the automotive industry. One example is that the Wagoneer was the first vehicle to mate a 4x4 system to an automatic transmission. In 1984, the Grand Wagoneer joined the Jeep lineup as an even more luxurious version of the Wagoneer. Unfortunately, production of both models came to a halt in 1991 and haven't returned since, until now! Wagoneer is returning as a premium extension of the Jeep brand with its own nameplate. While launching itself into a luxurious future, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer pay homage to Jeep's long history and capture the spirit of American ingenuity. Both models offer world-class capability, comfort, and technology. So how do you tell them apart? Keep reading below to find out!

Engines and drivetrains

The first and main difference between the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is the engine sizes. Starting under the hood of the Wagoneer, you'll find a 5.7L V8 engine that is rated for 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. It is equipped with eTorque, a 48-volt hybrid assist system to help keep emissions low. The Wagoneer comes standard with rear-wheel drive while three four-wheel-drive systems, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II, are optional. The Grand Wagoneer is powered by a 6.4L V8 that kicks out 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. The Grand Wagoneer employs cylinder deactivation to save on fuel. Unlike the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer comes with Quadra-Trac I 4WD as standard, while Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II are available.

Exterior design

The difference in the exterior appearance of the Wagoneer is more subtle, as one might imagine. Both models feature a forward-leaning grille, paying homage to the original model. The grille features seven distinctive slots, a simple note nodding to Jeep's iconic image. On either side of the grille, you'll find crisp LED headlights. The side profile of both models features a sharp A-line running from the sides of the headlights to the rear of the vehicle, creating a beautiful silhouette. Wheel sizes for both models range from 18 inches to 22 inches. The Grand Wagoneer models stand out with subtle trim differences for a more premium appearance. These include features like a Gloss Black painted roof for a two-tone appearance, more unique LED headlights, more chrome, a refined hood, power running boards, and more defined fender flares.

Interior design

While both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are premium SUVs with luxurious interior features, the Grand Wagoneer receives upgrades throughout the cabin. The most significant interior difference is that the Wagoneer comes with an 8-passenger setup, two bucket seats in the front, and second and third-row three-person bench seats. A seven-seat layout with second-row captain's chairs is an available option. Meanwhile, the Grand Wagoneer is the opposite; it features a seven-seat configuration with second-row captain's chairs, while an 8-seat layout with a second-row bench is optional. Another main difference is the materials used. While the Wagoneer's dash has metal trim, the Grand Wagoneer's dash is trimmed with Satin American Walnut wood. The infotainment touchscreen on the center stack of the Wagoneer is 10.1 inches, while the Grand Wagoneer features a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen. The Grand Wagoneer also offers four-zone automatic climate control.
