What 4x4 Systems does Jeep Use?

For decades now, Jeep has been known to provide vehicles for daily drivers and off-road enthusiasts alike. Drivers are so fond of Jeep mainly because of their 4x4 capability. Whether you're trekking through a snowstorm or navigating rugged terrain, 4x4 helps maintain traction and keeps you heading in the right direction. Jeep offers a handful of different 4x4 systems for the lineup, each one designed to provide tailored 4x4 capability for that specific vehicle. All of Jeep's 4x4 systems are available with Selec-Terrain Traction Management to further customize the vehicle's control with Auto, Sport, Snow, Rock, and Sand/Mud modes. Keep reading below to take a closer look at the 4x4 systems offered by Jeep!

Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator 4x4 systems

Command-Trac 4x4 is a part-time 4x4 system that operates in 4x2 mode until the driver shifts the transfer case into 4x4. This provides versatility for drivers who commute daily or drive their Jeep on and off the road by having 4x4 capability available at a moment's notice. Driver's can shift into 4x4 on-the-move at speeds up to 55 MPH.
Rock-Trac is a fantastic choice for those who seek superior off-road prowess. Standard on the Rubicon trims, Rock-Trac comes with high and low 4x4 modes. 4-high provides a 50/50 split of torque between the front and rear axles while 4-low provides low-speed rock-crawling capability with a 73.1:1 crawl ratio and electronic locking front and rear differentials.

Jeep Cherokee 4x4 systems

Active Drive I is a single power unit that delivers seamless shifts between two and four-wheel drive without any driver input. This system monitors wheel spin and automatically redistributes torque when slippage is detected. The rear axle disconnect only employs the 4x4 system when the road conditions call for more traction to maximize efficiency. Active Drive I comes with Selec-Terrain with Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes.
Active Drive II offers high and low-range 4x4 capability. This takes all the features of Active Drive I and adds a low-range gear mode. This offers low-speed control and traction for off-roading situations.
Active Drive Lock is standard on the Cherokee Trailhawk trim. This takes Active Drive II and adds a mechanical rear axle lock and Rock mode to the Selec-Terrain rotary dial.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 systems

Quadra-Trac I is a full-time 4x4 system. It utilizes a single-speed transfer case that defaults to a high-range mode to seamlessly deliver superior traction on all road conditions without any driver input. The center differential sends 48% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 52% of torque to the rear wheels. It also works quietly with the Brake Lock Differential and Four-wheel Brake Control systems to maximize traction.
Quadra-Trac II is another full-time 4x4 system, but instead of a single-speed transfer case, it uses a two-speed transfer case with high and low-range modes. It defaults to high-range mode but will shift to low-range when the system detects the need for more traction. When a loss of traction is sensed, the system will electronically engage the clutch pack to send up to 100% of available torque to the axle with the most traction.
Quadra-Drive II with a Rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential provides the same capability as the Quadra-Trac II system while adding an electronic limited-slip rear differential. This adds another layer of protection against slippage by monitoring wheelspin, predicting a loss of traction, and making the necessary adjustments to limit the slip.

Jeep Compass and Renegade 4x4 Systems

Active Drive utilizes a single-speed transfer case capable of automatically shifting in and out of four-wheel drive seamlessly. The rear axle disconnect allows for maximum efficiency when four-wheel drive is not necessary. The system also has balanced torque distribution with a brake lock differential and comes with Selec-Terrain.
Active Drive Low comes standard on the Compass and Renegade Trailhawk trims. This system pairs the Active Drive 4x4 system with a two-speed transfer case with a 20:1 crawl ratio for excellent low-speed crawling control. 4-Low mode locks the front and rear axles for added low-speed control.
