Tire Tips to Keep You Rolling Into Spring

After April showers come May flowers, and also wet conditions for driving. Now that the winter has gone, you will want to plan the next holiday trip and the weekend getaway by road. Here, experts give you some tire tips you should follow before you hit the road in spring:

  • Check air pressure in your tires, and ensure that when you want to stop the car, your tires support you in what you want to do. Check the correct air pressure recommended by your car manufacturer, which you can find on your car's door edge, glove box door, fuel door, door post and also your owner's manual. Keeping your tires properly inflated also reduces the extent of damage your tires or metal wheel may undergo during a pothole hit or other road hazard.
  • Make sure that your tires have the right balance and alignment, so that the car does not skid in the wet road conditions of the spring. Hitting potholes may throw your vehicle's front end misaligned. If your car pulls while driving, then its sign that something is wrong. Check your tires tread, and look for any uneven tread wear. If you hit a pothole severely, then take the car to a tire dealer, and get its tire balance and alignment checked there and then.
  • Rotating the tires can sometimes be helpful in correcting irregular wear on the tires. But before rotating them, refer to your owner's manual, and check the recommendations. If the manual does not specify any tires rotation period, then rotating them every 5000 miles is a good rule of thumb.
  • In case of a sudden rain, the tires may hydroplane if you drive too fast or drive on the worn tires. So, before you hit the road on a spring day, you should check the wear level of the tires, and get them replaced if needed. Experts suggest slowing down during rains, and checking the tread on the tires at least once in a month. The tires should have a tread depth of at least 2/32 inches.
Now that the spring season is approaching, you should take your car out, and check its tires particularly. If there are signs of severe damage or wear, you should have them replaced before they cause a serious problem to you and your family during the drive. Follow these tire tips to keep you rolling into spring.
