2018 Wrangler JL Off-Road Capability

When designing the all-new Wrangler, Jeep focused on building a vehicle that offered quality, reliability and durability. But we all know the true focus of a Jeep Wrangler - legendary off-road capability that simply can't be matched.  The new Wrangler is more capable than ever, with two advanced 4x4 systems, and a first for this model - a two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive. This new 'Selec-Trac' full-time two-speed transfer case will allow off-roaders to constantly send power to both sets of wheels. Jeep's Command-Trac 4x4 system uses a two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. There are three engines available for the new Wrangler - a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 and all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine joins the well-tested 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. There are two available transmissions. First up is a new standard six-speed manual transmission that features a unique design that employs new gear ratios for improved crawl ratio performance, a new gear pattern, and a cable-operated design. Next, is an eight-speed automatic transmission that allows the Wrangler to optimize engine output while on the trails.  This transmission is uniquely designed for the requirements of the Wrangler Rubicon model.  Off-road performance benefits from its 4.7:1 first gear ratio coupled with a 4.1:1 final drive, delivering unmatched capability.

The 2018 Rubicon - Ultimate Off-Road Performance

The Rubicon model has made its own name in the world of off-roading. It has always been the 'off-road-ready' Wrangler and comes factory-packed with all the latest off-road technologies. In fact,  the previous generation Rubicon model won the "4x4 of the Decade" award from Four Wheeler magazine. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon carries on the dynasty; it is the most off-road capable of the Wrangler JL lineup. While one always has the ability to outfit any Wrangler to be off-road-ready, the Rubicon comes that way. It includes special 33-Inch All-Terrain tires, a heavy-duty Dana M210 front axle and an M220 rear axle, shorter 4.10 axle gearing, 4.0-to-1 low-range gearing, an electronically disconnecting front roll bar, and rock rails. Its Rock-Trac off-road system can supply an 84:1 crawl ratio when equipped with the manual transmission. The heavy-duty transfer case delivers extra torque and control.  It also comes with Tru-Lok front and rear electronic locking differentials that lock power and distribute it evenly between the wheels for ultimate traction during low-speed rock crawling.

Final Thoughts on the 2018 Wrangler Capability

Every single 2018 Jeep Wrangler proudly sports the Trail Rated badge. What does the Trail Rated badge mean?  To sport this badge, the vehicle must pass a series of grueling tests over the toughest terrain. These tests prove a vehicle's ability to withstand harsh conditions and deliver incredible off-road capability. While the Rubicon is certainly the ultimate in off-road capability, every Wrangler JL is built to travel beyond the road.
