EV Charging Stations Long Island
Learn All About EV Charging in NY!
In recent years, the automotive industry has seen an explosion of innovation and new releases specifically in the EV segment. EVs, or electric vehicles, run on battery power rather than gas! There are a few different types of powertrains, including PHEVs, which use a battery in tandem with a gas-powered engine, or a traditional hybrid or mild-hybrid system, which recaptures energy using regenerative braking. Lately, EVs and PHEVs have become particularly popular, because they help you either eliminate or dramatically reduce your need for fossil fuels. However, some new EV drivers might be uncertain about how they'll keep their vehicle charged on the go. Read on to learn about the EV charging options here in the Long Island area, and discover other benefits of driving an EV!
Where Can I Charge My EV?
There are lots of options when it comes to charging your EV or PHEV! For overnight charging, you can rely on a home charging station that's either plugged into your home, or directly connected to your electric grid. However, when you're on the go, you'll want to find a public charging station. Here on Long Island, we have many public charging stations for drivers to use! Let's take Nassau County for example, where our dealership is located. There are 57 public charging stations within Nassau County, the greatest number of which can be found in Garden City, with 8 stations, and Westbury, with 7 stations. When in doubt, you can most likely find public EV charging stations in major cities, or densely populated areas. Look for rest stops, shopping centers, university campuses, or other areas where there's lots of traffic. You can lookup EV stations on the New York State Energy Research & Development (NYSERDA) website!
Top Public Charging Tips
If you're new to driving an EV, you might be wondering what to do when it's time to charge your vehicle. In many ways, charging an EV is very similar to filling a car with gas. You'll see a charging port on the side of your vehicle, often towards the front end. Simply drive up to an available port, and use the touchscreen or pin pad to initiate your session, and pay for your charge. Our first tip is to know ahead of time what kind of cable is compatible with your car. That way, you can specifically seek out stations with a Level II cable, for example. Our next tip is to listen for a click when you plug in the cable, as this lets you know that it's fully connected. When your vehicle charges, it will go slowly at first, and then begin charging more quickly. Then, like when you fill your car with gas, it will slow down again before it's fully charged. If you're short on time, our tip is to charge your vehicle to about 80%, which will take advantage of the peak charging speed and go a bit faster if you're in a hurry.
Why Choose an EV?
Aside from the many environmental benefits of easing your dependence on fossil fuels, choosing an EV has a wealth of other benefits to enjoy! One of the major benefits is the savings you can enjoy when you choose an EV. The cost of electricity per kilowatt-hour is roughly 3 to 5 times cheaper than the cost of gas per gallon, and those savings really add up when you consider how often you fill your car with gas. Not only that, but electric costs also don't fluctuate nearly as much as gas prices tend to. Another major way you can save money by choosing an EV is through maintenance. Or perhaps we should say, lack of maintenance. If you drive a true EV with no gas engine, you'll no longer need to worry about certain services like oil changes, spark plug replacements, and more.
What Are Some EV Options?
The EV and PHEV market is expanding rapidly, and there is already a great selection available today! Plus, many of the PHEVs you'll find in-store are electrified versions of the vehicles you already know and love. For example, Jeep offers two electrified models, the Grand Cherokee 4xe and the Wrangler 4xe. These models offer all the great Jeep capability you expect, including available all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and more. The Grand Cherokee also has luxurious features like Nappa leather-trimmed seats, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and 20-inch polished wheels. Another familiar option is the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid! This three-row minivan is a great choice for any family, and it offers tons of features to keep your passengers entertained, including rear-seat touchscreens with Amazon Fire TV.
