While the Ford Explorer has seen little to no changes for the 2018 year, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been hard at work. The 2018 model year for the Jeep Grand Cherokee brings with it a new 707 horsepower supercharged engine and smaller updates for the standard features as well. The Ford Explorer, on the other hand, has only added a 4G LTE hotspot and made a few changes to the look of styling on the front and rear.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power & Handling

Five engines are available to choose from on the Grand Cherokee. Only the last two engines are paired to specific trim levels. The top trim, the Trackhawk, is matched to an engine with 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. This engine is also capable of towing an incredible 7,400 pounds! Most engines come standard with four-wheel drive, but the bottom two engines also have the option of two-wheel drive. Every engine is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

2018 Ford Explorer Power & Handling

The Ford Explorer offers three choices for engine options. The top engine gives a total capability of 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is paired to certain trim levels. This top engine is matched to the Sport and Platinum trims. These three engines are all paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and the choice of all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features & Design

The lineup for the Grand Cherokee is the Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, SRT, and Trackhawk. The base features are 17-inch wheels, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio, two USB ports, rear parking sensors, keyless ignition and entry, and so much more! This vehicle is capable of off-roading, smooth driving, and incredible towing. Many additional options are available as well for added luxury, like a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, upgraded leather upholstery, and even a 19-speaker audio system.

2018 Ford Explorer Features & Design

The Explorer lineup starts with the Base trim and carries upward with the XLT, the Limited, the Sport, and lastly, the Limited. The standard features are pretty basic and include cloth upholstery, a Sync voice command, a rearview camera, and manually adjustable front seats. The Explorer is pretty basic with not many differences between the various trim levels. No additional options are available either. What you see is what you get. The top trim only adds simple items like a plain panoramic sunroof, an automated parking system, and a new audio system.

Conclusions

With so few of options available and the lack of power under the hood, the Ford Explorer falls short of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee has more to offer with its available off-roading, extra safety features, and smooth driving abilities.
